Learn how to make the most simple calming coconut + shea butter moisturizing lotion bars to soften dry skin and incorporate some calm into your little one’s nighttime routine.
When my firstborn arrived into the world seven years ago, I did not believe or understand the value of sleep routines. Truthfully, I did not even believe it was possible for a baby to be on a schedule. I had already started my career in sleep medicine and understand the importance of sleep, especially in children. I just didn’t think quality sleep was realistic when you have a baby.
Fast forward six years and another child later, everything has changed. Our lives do revolve around that nap time I protect so dearly. And one thing I know in my heart that I did right this time around: implement a solid bedtime routine and early sleep time.
I have two great sleepers that get twelve hours of uninterrupted sleep each and every night. Our breastfeeding son has been sleeping twelve hours a night since he was four months old. We did not have to implement any harsh sleep training. But, we do always keep nap times consistent, put him down early enough that he does not become sleep-deprived, and follow the same exact routine at night, which includes a peaceful and calming regime to cue the signals for sleep.
Our bedtime routine for our twenty month old son looks like this:
- Bath time with lots of play and these soap bars.
- Massage with my homemade lavender body whip + pajamas.
- Nursing and snuggles.
- Brush teeth with mommy.
- Create a calming atmosphere in the room with diffuser and soften lights.
- Bedtime story.
- Sleep (lights off between 6:00 – 6:30 PM)
Bath time is by far the favorite part of the routine. But, unfortunately, daily bathing leaves his skin dry. So I made these calming coconut shea butter bars from coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, and incorporated a dreamy essential oil blend with a calming and grounding scent profile. Pj loves when I rub these soothing bars on him, which gently melt away as you use them and leave the skin baby soft and smooth.
The ingredient breakdown:
Shea aids in the skin’s natural collagen production which improves skin integrity, and also nourishes to prevent drying. We see much softer skin immediately upon using these bars.
Beeswax forms a natural antibacterial barrier on the surface of the skin. I use it as a preventative measure against bacterial skin conditions such as diaper rash. Beeswax also makes my soaps more firm, allowing them to last a bit longer.
Coconut oil improves skin hydration and also has natural antimicrobial properties that work inhibits the growth of microorganisms. I have replaced my nighttime moisturizer because it promotes skin integrity.
The essential oil blend:
Lavender promotes relaxation and has a scent that’s fresh, floral, clean, and calm.
Cedarwood is a woodsy, warm, balsamic aroma that creates a relaxing, calming, and comforting atmosphere when diffused to help support a relaxing nighttime routine.
Aromaease is perfect for creating a powerful and comforting space. It is my absolute favorite blend of all time! The blend’s key essential oils—Peppermint, Spearmint, Ginger, Cardamom, and Fennel—make an aroma that is minty, fresh, and bold. In the bath, it creates a refreshing sensation and a soothing aroma. If you don’t have AromaEase, peppermint would be a wonderful alternative.
I always use a double boiler just for my soaps and shampoo bars.
I am wishing I used my owl or moon soap molds! But didn’t get too creative here. You can use any soap mold you have on hand.
I find lush tins hold this size soap bar perfectly. I use it to keep it dry in my shower and for travel!
You can go ahead and diffuse this same blend to help solidify this scent around bedtime, to send your little one the subconscious cue that it’s time to fall asleep. - 1/3 cup beeswax pellets
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- your choice of essential oil (10-30 drops)
1. Melt your coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax over a double boiler. Do not add in your essential oils yet.
2. Once melted, remove from heat and add in your essential oils (optional) stir until well combined.
3. Pour into your soap mold.
4. Let soap cool and solidify completely before use. I like to put mine in the fridge overnight.
5. Store in an airtight container in a cool space to prevent melting or drying out.
