Growing up, we had no shortage of fruit roll ups or gushers in our house. My sister and I loved that type of sweet “fruit” snack, and now, my children love gummy-type snacks, too. Although they have never tried “fruit roll ups”, I knew they would love them. Not only are they fun to play with, but these are made with my homemade apple sauce, which they can not get enough of. You are welcome to puree other types of fruit that you have on hand, instead of using applesauce as your base.
I have been experimenting with dehydrating fruit in our oven, since we don’t have a dehydrator. (helloo dried fig and apple chips!) and decided to give fruit leathers a try. We will be recreating them with all types of seasonal fruits. In fall, we will continue to enjoy our apple + pumpkin.
I happened to have made a lot of apple sauce the day I created this recipe, so I made two baking sheets (or 24 leathers) worth. However, if you would prefer to make fewer fruit leathers, just cut the amount of puree needed for the recipe in half. Example: Just use two cups of fruit for one baking sheet or 12 fruit leathers. You can also sweeten it, if desired. I plan to try pomegranate and add plenty of honey to balance the bitter now that we are coming into pomegrante season! Next up I will do just green apple, and see what P+P think. All of these babies were gone before I knew it! I’m lucky I had the opportunity to photograph them before they were all gone. 🙂
