A nourishing homemade dandelion salve is so simple to make! Dandelions are the most simple plants to incorporate into your natural wellness regimes and in your homemade recipes. The entire plant is safe for the entire family, and they’re so easy to recognize. No special identifying courses needed, like many other plants. We can often find them right in our organic yards, which is a huge bonus because we want to make sure our salves are not made with toxic or sprayed weeds.
I love this recipe because while it gives you immediate relief like “icy hot” would, it’s plant power also targets inflammation and helps target the root of the problem. It’s a wonderful, simple DIY that you should have on hand at all times!
Dandelions are good for your skin
Did you know that this everyday weed is a powerful tool? Dandelions have become a beneficial part of my skincare routine. Dandelions are not only naturally good at muscle relief, but they are also amazing thanks to their ability to detoxify the skin. When the skin is clean, the pores stay clearer and the complexion has a chance to heal. I do not like makeup, and especially not during the summer. So this salve is a great way to stay moisturized with a fresh-looking complexion. This salve can be used on sore muscles, dry hands, and even as a moisturizer before bed. With the recommended essential oils added, it even has a wonderful gentle cooling sensation followed by warming – that I just love on my skin after some sun too.
Simple, organic + non toxic ingredients!
You only need a few simple ingredients for nourishing dandelion salve. One of them is dandelion oil, which you can find the recipe for here. This recipe is for a slow infusion + a solar infusion for drying – which I always do to enhance the medicinal properties of the plant. If you want to make this recipe quickly without waiting weeks for your dandelion oil to infuse, you can find a quick + heated dandelion recipe on the web. I haven’t personally done it and tried it on my skin, so I can’t comment on whether I recommend it or not. The other ingredients will be linked down below!
I have been doing a lot of exercises in the last few weeks and not a day goes by that my muscles aren’t sore. The kind of sore that you love from knowing your building muscles! Yet, some days (particularly after leg day) I know I’m going to need some natural muscle relief. This is also extremely useful on my occasional lower pain pain. And that’s exactly why I was so excited to add panaway essential oil to my dandelion salve. I also add a few drops of ginger for “warming” like you get in traditional icy hot. How does dandelion salve ease aches and pains:
The linoleic acids found in dandelion also has properties that help in relieving inflamed joints. Studies show that linoleum acid decrease inflammation and improve clinical outcomes. Using dandelions internally and externally can help reduce inflammation in the body. Drink dandelion tea, add dandelion root to your bone broth (I have a recipe here) and use this dandelion salve topically.

I also combined the power of essential oils to help combat aches and pains. Panaway essential oil by Young Living has a very familiar scent to “icy hot”. I really enjoy it, it smells fresh and medicinal, but is not manufactured like some of the constituents in Icy hot.
How does panaway essential oil relieve aches and pains:

Where to get dandelion oil:
You will have to make your own. Please note if you search for dandelion oil for purchase, you will see dandelion tincture, which is not the same as dandelion infused oil. I could not find one for purchase to share with you, so please use this nourishing homemade dandelion oil recipe to make your own. It’s so simple!
Harvesting and cleaning dandelions:
Dandelions are easily identifiable and abundant. They’re notoriously easy to harvest and simple to clean and use. The entire plant is edible from flowers, leaves, to root.
I like the harvest my dandelions from my own garden. We’re lucky to have a garden where they grow abundantly, without fertilizer, however we also don’t have pets. Make sure you’ve located a safe space that’s free of fertilizer and that is not frequently visited by dogs.
To harvest the entire plant from root, use a weeding fork. Angel the fork about an inch into the soil to loosen the root, and then carefully pull the entire plant from the ground. Shake free from dirt and remove any damp or slimy leaves.
Run dandelion crowns and green through water, while carefully opening their crowns to be sure you’ve removed any dirt and pests.
If you’re using fresh dandelion root, peel the “skin” as if it were a carrot, and clean it well. Then you can slice it exactly like you would a carrot. Give it a try, it’s delicious!
How to make homemade icy hot dandelion salve with panaway
- one cup of dandelion infused oil.
- two tablespoons beeswax pellets
- two tablespoons shea or coconut butter
- 25 drops panaway essential oil + 10 drops ginger essential oil
- Double boiler
- Spoon to stir
- In a double boiler, heat one cup of your dandelion oil
Add your beeswax and nourishing butter and let them melt into your oil
- Let cool for several minutes, but not long enough for it to start to solidify – and add your essential oils.
- Mix well and pour into container of choice. I used small tins and keep several for gifts.
There are no preservatives in this homemade salve, so I store mine in the refridgerator and use within one year.
