Right before the new year, I had an oracle reading from Flora Runa. Her wheel of the year reading included plant allies, and for me, January was ashwandaga. I made a cup of moon milk frequently, and am now excited to share some of the recipes I enjoyed!
What is moon milk?
Moon milk is a beverage that has gained popularity in recent times due to its potential health benefits. It is prepared by combining milk, either dairy or non-dairy, with a blend of herbs including ashwagandha, turmeric, and cinnamon. Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. It is believed to help the body manage stress and anxiety, which can contribute to better sleep quality. It is often consumed before bedtime to help improve sleep quality. We add different flowers and herbs in addition to ashwagandha and spices for our moon milk variations.
Why you’ll love it:
- Support restful sleep: Made with ashwagandha, it can be used to promote restful sleep, and stress and anxiety reduction. (Trusted source)
- Hawthorn berry magic: Hawthorn is used to help protect against heart disease and help control high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The Magic Behind the Ingredients:
Rose Petals: These delicate pink petals are more than just beautiful. They possess calming and uplifting properties, thanks to their natural essential oils. (Trusted source) Rose has been used for centuries in cultures around the world to promote tranquility and relieve stress. Inhaling the subtle aroma of rose petals as you sip the moon milk can help quiet the mind and prepare it for sleep.
Hawthorn Berries: Some studies suggest that hawthorn may help improve blood flow and circulation by gently dilating blood vessels. This could ease occasional discomfort and support a healthy heart rhythm. Protecting the melody: Hawthorn’s antioxidants go beyond free radical defense. They may also help protect blood vessels from damage, contributing to overall cardiovascular health. (Trusted source)
Spices: Warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom not only add a touch of sweetness and depth of flavor to the moon milk, but they also possess warming and comforting properties. These spices have been used in traditional medicine for centuries to aid digestion, promote relaxation, and improve sleep quality.
Warm Milk: Whether you choose dairy or plant-based milk, the warmth itself is a comforting and nurturing element. Drinking a warm beverage before bed can signal to your body that it’s time to wind down, promoting relaxation and preparing you for a restful sleep. And did you know that drinking warm milk enhances the nutrition quotient in the milk? And it’s naturally high in tryptophan, which promotes sleepiness. (Trusted source)
