The magic of the butterfly pea flower:
Butterfly pea’s scientific name is Clitoria ternatea, also commonly known as bluebellvine, blue pea, cordofan pea or Darwin pea (source)
Butterfly pea flowers are what are used to make this bed time treat blue in color. It’s an antioxidant powerhouse: packed with anthocyanins, the same antioxidants found in blueberries, this tea helps combat free radicals and promotes overall health. Butterfly pea flowers also have calming properties that can soothe your mind and prepare you for a restful sleep.
Butterfly pea flowers are responsible for those magical color changing drinks (especially lemonades) that are so popular. When the brewed tea is exposed to pH changes like those found in lemon juice or baking soda (both common household ingredients), they transform into vibrant magenta color. Blue is the most rare color that naturally occurs in nature, making it even more special!
There is no lemon juice added to this tea, so that’s why it’s that beautiful blue hue instead of purple!
What is moon milk?
It is prepared by combining milk, either dairy or non-dairy, with a blend of herbs including ashwagandha, turmeric, and cinnamon. Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. It is believed to help the body manage stress and anxiety, which can contribute to better sleep quality. It is often consumed before bedtime to help improve sleep quality. We add different flowers and herbs in addition to ashwagandha and spices for our moon milk variations.
Why it works:
Warm milk: warm milk offers a comforting embrace. Picture a steaming mug cradled in your hands, its gentle heat radiating warmth. Each sip carries the whisper of childhood bedtime stories, a sense of security and peace settling over you. The milk itself may not magically induce sleep, but the ritual, the warmth, and the faint vanilla or honey sweetness can act as a calming cue, signaling to your body that it’s time to unwind. So, if sleep eludes you, consider this simple bedtime companion. Let the warmth lull you away from daily worries, preparing your mind and body for a restful journey into the land of dreams.
Chamomile: Chamomile is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs known to mankind. This dainty flower nestled amongst green leaves, holds power far beyond its unassuming appearance. For centuries, this humble flower has been a bedtime secret, lulling weary souls into a peaceful slumber. Its gentle magic lies in its fragrant blossoms. Chamomile is widely regarded as a mild tranquilizer and sleep-inducer. Sedative effects may be due to the flavonoid, apigenin that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain. (Trusted source)
Lavender: with its delicate blooms and pastel hues, boasts calming properties that have lulled countless souls into peaceful slumber for centuries. When you combine the soothig effects of lavender and quality sleep hygiene, like preparing this calming night time sipper, studies show lavender improves restfulness upon waking. (Trusted source)
What does moon milk taste like?
Ashwagandha is notoriously earthy, aka it doesn’t have the best flavor on its own. But when paired with just the right amount of lavender, chamomile, warm milk, vanilla & honey, it’s well-balanced with a mostly fragrant lavender flavor.
