I’ve been loving this naturally caffeine-free latte in the afternoon. The creamy milk tea relaxes me and feels like a treat, a perfect alternative to the boring beige coffee drink I usually sip on.
The magic of butterfly pea flowers
This isn’t any ordinary flower, friends. For centuries, folks in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and beyond have been brewing up enchanting blue teas and using the butterfly pea flower’s magic to paint their food masterpieces. Just add hot water, and poof! The beautiful blue petals release their color, ready to turn your latte into a living piece of art. But they’re more than just pretty to look at. Butterfly pea flowers are packed with antioxidants and stress-busting power to keep you feeling good inside and out.
And even more amazingly, it changes color with a squeeze of citrus? Talk about magical! Enjoy it in these magical color changing beverages, like our Butterfly Pea Lemonade & Butterfly Pea Flower Cocktail.
It turns out that the rich, sapphire blue color of tea made from these flowers is due to it’s antioxidant property anthocyanin, which give the plant its naturally vibrant hue. But when exposed to pH changes like those found in lemon juice or baking soda (both common household ingredients), they transform into vibrant magenta color. Blue is the most rare color that naturally occurs in nature, making it even more special! If you are intrigued by it’s benefits, you will also love our beauty sleep inducing blue moon milk latte.

How to make a butterfly pea flower latte:
Start by bringing the cup of water to a boil.
Add the butterfly pea flowers to the water. If you are using a tea infuser, place the petals into the infuser and submerge it in the water. If you are not using an infuser, simply place the flowers directly into the water. Allow the mixture to steep for 3-5 minutes.
After 3-5 minutes, remove the infuser or strain out the flowers. At this point, add in your vanilla extra or honey or sweeter of choice to sweeten if desired. Next prepare your frothed milk.
To make frothed milk, simply add your milk into your milk frother, or if using a handheld milk frother, add 1/2 cup of milk to your small sauce pan. Heat on low for two minutes, or until it’s warmed, but not simmering. Use a handheld milk frother to foam it up or simply whisk vigorously with a whisk.
For a hot latte, pour frothed milk over warm butterfly flower tea and enjoy.
For an iced latte: Prepare a tall glass with a couple of ice cubes. Pour your butterfly pea flower tea into your glass with ice, leaving room for milk. Pour frothed milk over butterfly flower tea and enjoy.
